COUNTRIES MEET TO DISCUSS OECD TAX ISSUES

Pacific Islands News, 6 February 2002

A fourth meeting of the International Tax and Investment Organisation, ITIO, is taking place in the Vanuatu capital Port Vila. The meeting was opened yesterday by Vanuatu's Minister of Finance, Joe Carlo.

In the three-day meeting, participants will discuss the harmful tax competition initiative by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The meeting is also looking at the implications of the 28 February 2002 deadline for tax haven countries to commit to eliminate harmful tax practice.

Other related issues, such as e-commerce, shipping registry, financial stability, International Monetary Fund assessments, Financial Action Task Force demands and Financing for Development are also being discussed at the meeting.

The ITIO is an initiative of the non-OECD members of the OECD Commonwealth Joint Working Group on Harmful Tax Competition.
